My biggest worry going into UTeach was whether or not I'd be able to handle a classroom kids.
Coming from one of the biggest Title 1 high schools in Texas, I’ve faced many of horrors of poor classroom management. It’s also a big worry of mine, being a female POC and how the dynamics in a classroom setting are different than if I were to be a male or non-POC. If I were to discover that I am not able to control a classroom, that may be the biggest reasons I would not become a teacher.
I realized after going through UTeach202 was that I really do enjoy teaching.
The hesitance I had with classroom management was instantly resolved when I first met the students the students at Hill Country Middle School. They are not only very well-behaved but they also have a very high sense of respect for those in higher positions. Even before I started teaching the students, they would always come up to me and asked if it was okay if they used the restroom, or if it was okay if they left the classroom, showing both the respect that they had for my CT Mr. Bremer as well as myself. I was, however, insanely nervous about my first lesson but I soon realized that here was not much to worry about in terms of classroom management (as I had blew things out of proportion).
After observing the kids and learning their behaviors, I realized how I should approach the class. The kids had already knew me after my observations and were ready to have me teach them. Immediately after my first lesson the first thing that Jacob talked to me about was my classroom management skills and how it was also his biggest worry when he was a new teacher. He went on to say how classroom management is not something that's easily obtained but rather something that comes with years of experience and how he himself is still working on his own style of classroom management. My worries about being a female POC in the classroom instantly became a thing of the past after I got to learn more about the students and how they treated Mr.Bremer.
Classroom management to me became clear that it should be established very early on with the students. Once you have a set and consistent routine, an understanding between the student and teacher is established. The students will know how you will react to different behaviors that they may produce, so they can know what punishments to follow. After this has been establish, the teacher can focus on delivering the lesson with minimal distractions. It's also important to separate the student from their actions so that they understand that you do not have an issue with them personally, you just do not approve of their actions.
